Poète et traducteur, héritier et continuateur de l'oeuvre des Romantiques Californiens, inventeur de nouvelles formes d'expression poétique, il fut également l'un des fondateurs de la fantasy outre-atlantique à travers ses contributions marquantes et originales aux pulps magazines tout au long des années 1930. Peintre et dessinateur autodidacte, Smith était aussi sculpteur: ses créations dans ce domaine illustrent et enrichissent les univers fantastiques évoqués dans ses contes. The Sorcerer Departs, dont la première édition remonte à 1963, est unanimement considérée non seulement comme la première étude biographique consacrée à Smith, mais aussi comme la meilleure publiée à ce jour. Ouvrage de référence pour tout amateur de Smith, l'essai de Donald Sidney-Fryer constitue également une excellente initiation à l'oeuvre du Barde d'Auburn.
